Poker eBook Market: A Year In Review

It's around this time last year that “Let There Be Range” was released. I still remember the excitement as I was frantically answering email and forum posts. I don't think I slept more than 3 hours per night during that hectic week. I can never forget the image of me shivering while seating in my Mirra chair and used my 10 year-old kitchen table as a desk. For potential busto posts, I do have an office and a desk in there. I just enjoy sitting in the kitchen sometimes.

I remember thinking that after “Let There Be Range” was done, I would “move on” with poker and start my investment career. I quoted move on because I'm not actually leaving poker. I would just spend a lot less time on it. I wanted to play a bigger game and nothing is bigger and more challenging than the stock market. The amount of money involved is bigger too. And this excites me. After dealing with thousands of dollars every day for three years, you kind of need a bigger amount to feel that excitement again. Hey, you are only young once.

After the positive reception of LTBR, I thought maybe I can do a PLO book too. Maybe I'm a good teacher and isn't that terrible of a writer. And I can hire editors to fix my horrendous grammar. Just like that, “The Pot-Limit Book” was born. I am really proud of this book because I have heard nothing but positive reviews on it. I think it's going to be tough for someone to write a better book to help transition no-limit players to PLO. Of course I'm realistic enough to realize that one day, someone will.

Now, I'm coming out with my third book to help players exploit regulars. Because many regulars mass tabling, they often follow a system. And once you follow a system, no matter how solid that system is, there are some glaring weaknesses that you keep doing over and over again and don't notice it because you have so many tables. I'm really proud of the reception so far and think it will be a success.

I hope to come out with more books *hint* in the following months. Actually, I already have topics in mind and you will soon find out in the next month or so. I am a very emotional-based worker. What this means is when I'm excited and full of adrenaline, I can work for a straight month before crashing. Then I take a vacation to recover and hope my competition doesn't take any market share.

I still remember the first time BobboFitos messaged me on AIM and told me he finished writing a book. I was impressed because I didn't know anyone who has written a book. He talked about publishing it with twoplustwo. Later we found out the partnership couldn't work. Although I have read BobboFitos's "Bobbo's Bible", I don't think the poker population would be ready for it. I think Rob took the correct route and sold it on his own. Well, thank god he did!

In case some people don't know, Rob is BobboFitos and he is a good friend of mine. He's very quirky and is fun to be around with. I stayed with him during the 2008 WSOP and hung out a lot (hi Rhino) with him during the 2009 WSOP, probably more than any poker poker who wasn't my roommate. I want to write this in case some people think Rob and I don't know each other.

After LTBR was released, Improva released “The Poker Puzzle”. I honestly do not know about Improva's ebook until a customer compared LTBR and “The Poker Puzzle.” From what I have gather, Improve did a good job on his work.

Then came BalugaWhale's “Easy Game” and all hell broke loose on twoplustwo haha. Mason started cracking down on ebooks because we were self-promoting. The funny thing is BalugaWhale got Mason's attention not because he was self-promoting but because he was using an editor Mason didn't think highly of. After that, none of us could create a thread on twoplustwo regarding our ebooks and that obviously sucked. BalugaWhale's ebook got good reviews and I know a few people who read both LTBR and “Easy Game.” Both books are good but in different ways. I guess this is true since we don't write the same and haven't read each other's work. The day where someone will duplicate our content will come though. Hopefully, it's not any time soon and if they do, let their duplication be wrong!

And of course, who can forget Ryan Fee's free ebook. Although I haven't read it, I have heard it's good. I don't think Fees will be loved by too many people if he does the same thing for a PLO book!

The past year has been kind of surreal. I didn't know there was so much work to do when running a small business. I hope the business grows bigger and our products get read by more people. With our upcoming products, I have no doubt that our audience will increase. And it will be more applicable than all the current three books combined.

I don't know what to expect in the upcoming year. All I hope is that I'll be writing the same blog post a year from now with the same optimism for the future.
