The Difference Between Knowing And Feeling

I knew he had air. I felt he had air.

What is the difference between these two statements?

In one statement, you will fold. In the other, you will do something about it.

And that is basically the difference between knowing and feeling.

And it is the difference between losing and winning. Or winning and crushing.

In our lives, we probably know a few things. Some know a lot. But to know something is not enough. To succeed, you must feel it. Now I know why they say experience is everything.

Someone can tell you that removing your wisdom teeth is going to hurt a few hours after surgery. You know it'll hurt. But until you feel it, you don't really know how much it hurts.

Why is this concept important and how does it help your poker game?

A coach tells you 3-betting light pre-flop is position is profitable. You know this. Because everyone tells you it's profitable. It's been proven that it's profitable. But you don't do it as often as you should. One probable reason is you have selective memory. You 3-bet someone and they 4-bet you. Now you are discouraged. Because why do you always get 4-bet when you 3-bet someone. Now you revert to nit-hood. Your game is stagnant.

So how do you fix this?

You pick a bad regular at your table who doesn't call 3-bet a lot and you 3-bet him constantly like a maniac. You will get away with it because he will fold a lot. Now, you know this. But unless you feel the dominance that you have over him, you will hesitate the next time you 3-bet someone. This is the main reason why coaching is good. It gives you that indirect feeling of dominance in sweat sessions.

Those who are highly successful in poker try new plays and see if they work. If the plays work, players feel it. And even if they tell someone to do it, that person cannot execute the same play. Because although that person knows about the concept, unless he does it himself, he cannot feel the success. And if you can't feel the success, your confidence won't be high.

Try to remember the first time you 3-barrel someone. Boy, it was exhilarating. After that, you felt it. You felt you can do it again. For some people, they try to 3-barrel bluff once, get caught, and misery was all they felt. So they stopped doing it. And return to nit-hood.

The moral of the story is to test your knowledge so you can gain experience. That's why a lot of successful players recommend logging in a lot of hands. It's to gain experience. It's to have a taste of that success. Have it to the point where you can feel it. And become addicted to it.

I will leave this entry with a simple analogy.

You have been using condoms ever since you started banging. Then a friend tells you it's way better without a condom. You know this. Because everyone tell you it feels better. It's been proven it feels better. But you don't feel it. Then one day your significant one suprised you with a birth control pill. Now you feel it. And you realized there's astromonical difference between knowing and feeling.
